Public housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Public housing comes in all sizes and types, from scattered single-family housing to apartments. Approximately 1.3 million households live in public housing units managed by some 3,300 housing authorities. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers federal aid to local housing agencies that manage the housing units for residents at rents they can afford.
The Jackson County Housing Authority (JCHA) owns and operates 761 units and offers a variety of housing opportunities to applicants so they can choose the type that best fits their family’s needs. Residents pay affordable rents based on approximately 30% of the gross household income.
JCHA’s Public Housing rental portfolio is separated into two categories: PHA-owned sites include conventional developments and scattered site properties. All JCHA locations are equipped with laundry facilities or individual in-unit laundry hookups. Some locations have playgrounds, basketball courts, community room space, computer labs, and business centers; others have community gardens and pet parks. JCHA provides excellent maintenance for all housing units and on-site property managers at various locations.
Public Housing policies can be found on our governing policies page. Forms and necessary documentation requirements are on our forms, handouts & publications page.
